Thread Name: Mairi's Wedding-how to pronounce Mairi
Subject: RE: Mairi's Wedding-how to pronounce Mairi
The proper title is the Lewis Bridal Song but Mairi's Wedding is more often used now. It was written in the 1930's in Gaelic by Johnny Bannerman and was later translated to English by Hugh Robertson.
Mairi is pronounced Mah-ree with the emphasis on the first part. I have also heard it in Gaelic as Myr-ee but the first is much more common. "Mh" changes the M to a V as stated earlier and would be correct when addressing a person directly.
