This query is in the vein of "I don't know much about...., but I know what I like"!!

I understand that "She moved thro' the fair" uses a mixolydian tune. Can somebody explain to this poor plebe (in simple terms please) what this means.

I gather a few other tunes such as "The Star of Belle Isle" and "Green Shores' use it too. Thanks
