When I was a young trainee nurse at a big Melbourne hospital we took in drunken old men from the streets. There was room and time for that sort of help then. We fed them and bathed them and treated their illnesses, then found them places to live.

One day an old fellow said to me, "Just stand there for a moment. You know, when the sunlight catches your beautiful eyes they look like pools of rich dark gravy!"

I've had lots of compliments since then -- relating to music and writing but this one is the one that comes to mind first.
