Thread Name: Blind Blake Calypso singer???
Subject: RE: Blind Blake Calypso singer???
I will have to listen to my copies of the song 'Jones Oh Jones' again to get the proper words. Being Bahamian I understand the accent and as close as some people are to the right words they aren't from here, and as they try and find relevant words with a foreign ear they tend to miss the actual word. Of course many of these things are in local context and those not familiar would not be able to relate to the language or the events prompting the reason for the song.
'Blind' Blake Higgs was not born blind, he knew colours. He would always come to my grandfather's shop - 'W.H. Sands & Son Ltd.'to buy what English cloth he needed to make what ever it was that he wanted to wear. His wife would drop him off at the front door of the shop, he would come in and I would ask him how he was and what he wanted, He was always very particular about the colours he had in mind for whatever outfit that it was that he needed at that time. Always posessed with a wry humour and a smile and always asking about the older people in the family he was a friend and customer throughout his life. He passed away in 1986 and should have been awarded more recognition during his lifetime. I still enjoy his music and feel very special that such a unique, humble and talented person was one of ours.
There wewe many other very talented Bahamians including Tony 'The obeah Man'McKay, George Symonette and Joseph Spence. We have many talented persons who keep to the real Bahamian music today like Andrew Jones and Ronnie Butler.
