Whatever critter you got, Kat, it ain't japanese beetles. They feed during the day, and there ain't no missin' 'em. If you don't have them right around you, just smile and keep quiet about it, and don't tempt the fates.
It may be that you don't have much growing that attracts them. If you don't have much grass, the grubs might have a hard time of it. The grubs feed on plant roots and organic matter in the soil. If you don't have much grass (I think I remember you saying you don't, your environment may be hostile enough to the grubs to keep them at bay.
