Dave, why would you want to annoy a chip shop owner? Had he served you a duff haddock or been stingy with the scraps? Or perhaps you had been visting a hostelry or two in that excellent market town and thought it would be a bit of a jape. Or was it that you'd just had a curry and were feeling the effects? :)
