Thread Name: BS: the religious case against belief
Subject: RE: BS: the religious case against belief
It wasn't long ago that Peter, Paul, and Mary recorded Power, telling us to "keep all of your atomic poison power away." I have to say I never felt completely comfortable with that song. Here in the Sacramento area, the voters chose to shut down a power plant that had just been completely rebuilt. Now, people aren't so sure what the answer is. I think that kind of uncertainty is real progress.
I think what Carse defines as belief is the illusion of Possession and Control of Absolute Truth. Here's a quote from the Amazon review:
The Religious Case Against Belief introduces three kinds of ignorance: ordinary ignorance (a mundane lack of knowledge, such as ignorance of tomorrow's weather or the reason why your stove is malfunctioning), willful ignorance (an intentional avoidance of accessible knowledge), and finally higher ignorance (a learned understanding that no matter how many truths we may accumulate, our knowledge falls infinitely short of the truth).
I think we could all use a dose of "higher ignorance."
