No wonder you all ate library paste as children! Out of curiousity, I looked up the ingredients from several sources, which are, with minor deviations, as follows:

1 c. flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. alum
4 c. water
Oil of cloves or wintergreen or peppermint

It's pretty much half sugar.
