Sinsull, the mug's your problem. The instructions on the oatmeal box say to put the ingredients in a 'medium, microwaveable bowl.' The larger bowl allows for the foaming which occurs during cooking.

I usually have to be forced to eat oatmeal. I have found, however, that the texture of Old Fashioned Quaker Oats is much nicer than that of the cheap stuff. Also, if I add a little butter or similar, it goes down better. It's no different whether cooked on the stove top or in the wave. The wave is faster and saves dish.

I remember a cold morning in the mountains on a geology field trip, long ago. Our student cook had prepared oatmeal. I would swallow some, and my esophagus would send it right back up to my mouth. 'We're not eating this!' is what my body seemed to be saying. A little margarine solved the problem.
