I recently picked up a compilation of African folk called Living is Hard: West African Music in Britain 1927-1929. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Even if you don't enjoy all of the music, some of it can be hard to listen to, it's all still fascinating to listen to. The tracks were recorded by Zonophone and the performers are West African immigrants to England. The idea was that Zonophone could dominate the untapped African music market by recording tracks like these and selling them in Africa. None of these songs were recorded for British audiences. This leaves the songs free of any pop influences that I usually associate with modern African music. Anyway, I'll stop all this rambling now.
