Comparable? Not at all. The Vanity Fair cover begins on a factual basis, ie, McCain is old (I am older) and Ms. McCain did/does? have a problem with pill addiction. Not to mention that it appears that McCain is willing to go along with the selective destruction of the Constitution. The fist bump has no relevance to them, however. Did I miss anything? :)

The Obamas were blindsided; just about the only factual thing on the New Yorker cover was that the Obamas are Black.
