It's all about turnout. Enthusiasm for McCain--even among his base--is not high. Not so for Obama.
Bush won in 2004 partly by the army of the Religious Right doing the gruntwork for him--thanks partly to the stupidity of some people on the other side pushing hot-button issues, like the Ten Commandments in courthouses, and homosexual marriage.
