If you don't feel able to make songs about personal feelings, you probably just aren't ready yet.  Don't let your friends push you into something you aren't comfortable with.  Make notes when ideas come into your head, and make sure you have a large wastepaper basket.  Far too many people write self-indulgent songs (love being the favourite topic) and don't have the self-awareness and critical equipment to understand when a thing bears repeating and when it's more appropriate to consign it to a quiet and dignified oblivion.  I'm sure you'll know when you come up with something worthwhile.  You may need to listen to some other kinds of music first, though, as I don't think that the Clancys will provide you with the raw material that you'll need...
