This is a great forum! I found this thread while trying to find lyrics of songs my mom sang to me when I was little, in the early 1960's. What's interesting is that my mom is Jamaican, so the song was not "Sammy" (or Sambo, as I've seen elsewhere) but "Jumbo" (or Jambo?).
Her version of the lyrics involved Jumbo sliding down a bannister and falling on his head. Another mentioned him having "an Auntie very poor" who "made him scrub the floor."
The final verse included something in French, that I can't quite recall.

Jumbo, ??? ici (Jambo lies here)
