I think that you can sing properly when seated or on your back. I agree though that
it's easier to sing standing. In opera, the singer as actor is asked to assume various
positions. True of the Broadway singer also.

The problem with singing is to avoid any kind of rigidity.

I guess you have to ask what constitutes good singing which is opening up
a Pandora's box. What style? What purpose? Etc.
