Thanks Peter, great explanation. Keeps me from falling into a pit of depression when I occasionally start agreeing with George Will!

When I first discovered Lehrer, I was deeply into guitar-accompanied music, whether straight or satirical. His "pop" piano accompaniements really turned me off. I rid myself of my snobishness by convincing myself that he was "sending up" popular music, as well as the events of the day. Oh what a prig I was at 16!
