They need a very bright light location and warm temps. We also would water usually only by spritzing the soil with a spray bottle of water rather than pouring water in the pot, unless the pot and plant are very large.
If the pot or tray is shallow and the humidity is high, moisture stays in the pot too long before evaporating. Even in an arid climate, it is difficult to keep cactus growing long term in an indoor situation.
