A simple answer to a question back there somewhere: Yes, you can trim a cactus. You can take a sharp knife and remove any or all unhappy parts, even reduce it to a stout base unit. Not a bad idea, actually. The cuts will "scab-over" in a few days. If you dont't want new branches this year (as wait until next spring) you can "rub-off" any buds that may appear.
