The closest thing in my edition of Partridge's Concise Dictionary Of Slang & Unconventional English is "Irish toothache. Pregnancy...The sexual frustration suffered by young men wose fiances or girlfriends kept on saying "no"...late 1940s." (You mean to say all my ex's were Irish, I wonder.)
