Can't see anything particularly offensive, though I've never heard the expression.

So Irish families tended to be on the large side for a generation or so longer than some other families. Nothing wrong with that, and I am sure all the younger offspring of such families, and their descendants, are duly grateful for that fact, without which they wouldn't exist.
