When I lived in Geauga County, Ohio -- a very heavily Amish area -- the bishops had said that it would not be "frugal" to require a farm owner to remove electricity, television, and such things simply to meet the religious requirements of an Amish tenant farmer. Nor, if you had an Amish woman helping with the household chores, would she be forbidden to use an electric iron or to watch television while ironing (and so on). The local Emergency Room had for a while a rash of vaginal infections caused by the use of plastic wrap for contraception.

The Amish folks I knew weren't, in the long run, a whole lot different from their "Yankee" neighbors.
