An early edition of MAD MAGAZINE featured tales of the creeping red death called DORMANT GOOKUM that slithered and slimed it's way inside anything through any possible opening and proceeded to do it's dirty work of enveloping and killing and then digesting everything in it's path. It was revealed at the end of the expose piece that this dormant gookum was really cherry Jell-o.
