Didja' ever wonder that for some period of time the term was in use for both? That's true I guess for most words that have gone through menopuase ("the change").........Like at one point someone could have said, "I had a gay old time of it at the rally and I'm glad I took my rubbers," and be talking about a homosexual rights protest where he met someone new or a church membership drive where it rained.
