Sandy - that's the problem with the Westminster, first past the post, model for elections. No British government since the war has had a majority of the popular vote (even the 1945 Labour 'landslide' only achieved 49.5%)and on a couple of occasions the party with the most votes has had fewer MPs than their rivals. The result is that we usually get governmentents that stay in power for long periods (especially the Tories) on a minority vote.
