Doug R, my position is one of tolerance for unions as long as they do not violate the rights of workers not to join a union.
I strongly support the Texas Right to Work provisions under the Texas Labor Code; workers cannot be forced to join or pay fees to a union. Oklahoma, another state where I have worked, has the right to work laws in their constitution, also the case in Arizona and, I believe, Florida.

In Canada, the system is different; workers may be organized, but by Court decisions are protected from fines or harassment by unions. They may not be forced to join strikers. Saskatchewan is the exception; it is union-friendly and violates the UN Article 20.2 which declares "No one may be compelled to belong to an association." The Supreme Court of Canada, in the Advance C and C case, 2001, declared that Canadians have a freedom from forced association, including forced union membership. More cases in defence of workers freedoms are gearing up. National Post, "No right to fine," Mortimer, Nov. 6, 2007.
