If you don't have the mp3 encoder patch for Audacity, you can save it as a .WAV file, import it into iTunes and then convert to mp3 within iTunes.

If you want to cut down a track in Garageband, import the file and then use the track editor - it's the button whose icon is a soundwave with a pair of scissors through it.
