Ake, it's not like McCain, Palin, Bush, and others don't from time to time use a word or phrase that can be taken the wrong way, especially out of context.   I don't think Obama's use of that phrase was that much of a faux pas -- as long as he doesn't back down and "apologize" to someone who wasn't even the object of his point. He needs to stick to his guns and ridicule McCain and some in the media for ASSUMING that when he said "lipstick on a pig" he was talking about the Governor of Alaska.
