I don't think, that the majority of US-american people will wake up. At least 50% and above will go on "sleeping".
Don't know why. Maybe this is due to a relatively low level of education, compared to european countries. And the deep belief that they live in god's own country.
My prognosis: McCain and his incompetent vice Palin will win the next election.
