I am sitting with my back to the wall of what sometimes is our spare-bedroom. In front of me an IBM G40 screen (I'm not really a 'screen person'), to my left, at a 45 degree angle (that or thereabouts) is my 'eternally being upgraded' AST Advantage, at the moment with 166MHz and 96 megs.
On top of that, a radio tuner, on top of that, my Samson 8 channel mixer and amp, connected to a pair of Pioneer CS-343's (old, but IMHO, an excellent sound), with the Yorkville bass bins of my personal P.A. (mixer and amp also). On top of that a guitar synth, and all connected through an amazingly tidy set of wiring (should I say so myself), to a cassette deck; an old Kenwood.
When I come back from Ireland towards the end of the year, I'll bring back a digital 8 track recorder, much like what Michael K described in his Musical Samples' thread.
Between this stack, and the screen is a Mustek scanner, and on the floor, to my left, and therefore in the corner of the room, is a decent enough HP deskjet.
So basically, I have barricaded myself into the corner of the room, looking 'out' at it, behind a rather large office desk with it's attendant drawers and filing cabinets, cluttered with everything from Tax returns, contracts, stationery, and advertising bumf. Candle on a large old handmade cider bottle (empty) carefully cultivated with 15 years of wax on it's sides, and miraculously transported from Ireland to Norway without a scratch, sits on my right. Ashtray, tobacco, ripped up empty Rizla packets, cable modem, and Morrocan insence burnerFour guitars are always on stands just beyond this mess; normally the Morris 9 string, the customised Washburn D92LTD, the Takamine EG332, and a beautiful wee Yamaha classical of no particular pedigree, but with the tone of it's 40 years evident.
There are 2 mike stands with Shure 52 Betas staring you in the face when you walk in the room. This is, of course, when no one is staying over, which is what happened over the last few days, when Séamus came up from Copenhagen to see the Waterboys.
The sofa/bed comes out from the wall opposite me, and the instruments normally dissappear too.
I'll be sound-proofing the place this year, as where I am is a quiet area of Oslo, on it's outer edges with a 2 minute walk/ski to the woods. It's a small apartment block with 8 apartments, mostly occupied by elderly, retired people, and although, I don't create a lot of 'noise', I would like the choice to either make some, or not. Soundproofing takes the old folks into account.Plenty of things to do in order to get this place (my space) ticking over the way I want it, which is the reason that I'll go back gigging again next year.
Whenever I want total seclusion, I take all of the afore-mentioned musical gear up to our cottage 250 km north of Oslo, and 25km off the road, set it up there and bang away to myself.
Which is why I want to get a laptop also. The cottage is solar-powered, and I REFUSE to put normal electric into it. I even feel very guilty about recharging the sun cell batteries with a generator. But that's a bridge I'll cross laterThere ye are, now!
