Christian Brothers (a kind of religious order for males -for those unaware) were generally percieved to be the leading proponents of this type of footwear in Ireland. At least this was the case in my schooldays, 1946 -58.
I may have sinned accordingly back in those bygone days but would be far too timid to attempt it now.
