johnross,
Thanks for the suggestions - I think my problem is sorted. Once again I'm staggered at the generosity of people on Mudcat - thanks all.
I have had a copy of the records - sans notes - which I was given by Ewan and Peggy back in the sixties and which I had occasion to re-visit recently.
Some time ago, when they came up in discussion, I expressed doubts as to the wisdom of re-issuing them - I know Ewan said he couldn't bear to listen to many of his early recordings as his approach to singing had changed so much over the years.
I have to admit that I was wrong and that a re-launch of the set is well overdue - they are magnificent. Bronson referred to them as "The most important event in the field since the publication of Sharp and Karpeles' Southern Appalachian collection" - I would happily go along with that.
I had heard that Topic was intending to reissue the set in full, but am disappointed that it is only a Readers (or Listeners) Digest version made up of somebody's idea of 'the best of....' Pity they didn't let Dick Greenhaus issue the set in full - they certainly merit it (and there won't be another opportunity - not in my lifetime anyway).
God knows, there are few enough ballad albums nowadays, Brian Peters' excellent selection is the only one that springs to mind.
Thanks again folks,
Jim Carroll
