I'm not clear on the details here, but as I recall, there was some hostile action before they fired on Ft. Sumpter. A supply ship attempted to supply the garrison and was fired upon by a group of Military students from a military academy in South Carolina.
I want to say the ship was the Star of.... not India, but a similar name.
