The other problems with that hypothetical is that the rich also get a lot more benefits from the taxes they pay than do those who are not rich. The beer scenario doesn't take any of the real world variables into consideration. Rich people receive more services from the government than those who are not rich. Rich people are more likely to have tax loopholes at their disposal, meaning that they actually pay a lot less taxes than the basic tax formula would seem to indicate. Rich people are far more likely to benefit from large subsidies to corporations (corporate welfare) than people who are not rich.

There's lots of rich people who have figured out how to pay no taxes at all.
