Appearently peregrina misssed my ROFLMAO at the end of my comment. Actually the US DID convert many of the gas pumps to liters. People were confused and coudn't figure out how much per gallon they were actually paying. Everyone was sure they were being ripped off. Within weeks those metric symbols disappeared as people would only buy gas at stations that had retained the Imperial measurements. It was a HUGE fiasco.
