The Captain Cook Festival proudly presents its Staithes Shanty Weekend this weekend ( Oct 25&26th) in the beautiful location of Staithes.

An ideal venue to listen to the sound of sea shanties and songs and to celebrate the birthday of James Cook - the worlds greatest sailor. Admission to all of the events is free - the festival plans to raise funds from raffles and donations.

The venues are The Captain Cook Inn and The Cod & Lobster. The music starts on Saturday afternoon and goes through until Sunday tea time. Outdoor performances may be arranged subject to weather conditions.

Folk Singers, Shantymen, Poets and Songwriters are among the many guest performers.These include the regions acclaimed traditional singer and songwriter Richard Grainger who has composed many well known songs about the sea and the areas maritime heritage, from Whitby Whaling to Captain Cook.

Men of Staithes will host the Saturday evenings entertainment at the Cod and Lobster.

Also appearing are Monkeys Fist ( A Shanty Group from South Yorkshire), Scots Songstress Wendy Arrowsmith,local duo Steve Dawes & Helen Pitt and Redcar based Bob Fortune.

Whitby Community Choir will perform on Sunday as will Poets Bob Beagrie and Andy Willoughby.
