Also mentioned is the cardón, a large branching cactus that grows to 60 feet (some resemblance to the Saguaro, another striking Baja plant).

But I think the word is cholla, the cactus (Ocotillo) with the meanest spines in the world but attractive blooming 'heads'.

'Chollo' is seldom used for the Fouquieria, and in the SW it is sometimes applied to Hispanic men.
