I can imagine the outcry if anyone made remarks about McCain going to be with her.

I would rather assume the same will apply if McCain's people are perceived as doing that. It's the kind of thing that would be likely to settle it for a lot of people who had been wavering about whom to vote for. Or even change the minds of some people who had been thinking of voting for McCain.
