That's true. The climate in the US has become (since Reagan got elected) one of blaming the poor for their misfortune. Anyone who tries to advocate for the poor (like ACORN, for instance) gets trashed in both political discourse as well as in the popular media. It's almost like people think poor people have some kind of contamination that rubs off on anyone who tries to advocate on their behalf.
