If the Syrian foreign minister's claim that the dead were "a father and his three children, a farm guard and his wife, and a fisherman" (Syria hits out at 'terrorist' US - BBC News), stands up, I can't imagine it will really help McCain too much.

They really need a response from Syria (or some group that can be labelled as surrogates for Syria) other than mere diplomatic protest, if they are going to be able to build this up into something that pushes the right buttons with the American public.
