Wearing shirts with no collars helped me with my 'rat's nest'... I have wavy hair that is perpetually tangled at the back.
Regular combing, having hair in a braid or plait, and wearing collarless shirts/tops is all I can suggest.
Oh, and not giving a rat's arse about what it looks like helped!
