Growing up in Chicago in the '50's, we got to watch Mahalia's show on TV on Sunday mornings and Studs' show during the week. Before Studs' show, I knew Win Stracke from the commercials he did, but he was a regular on Studs' show, and, of course, Win went on to help found the Old Town School in Oak Park at Dawn Greening's home.
I have tremendous admiration for Studs and all the others, like Art, the Fox Valley and OTSFM folks, and Rich Warren, that have kept carrying on the work for folk music in Chicago. We are starting to create traditions like these now in Portland, OR, at Artichoke Community Music.
