Our shih tzu took almost a year to figure it out, even with puppy pads in the kitchen that she is still free to use. And all she ever does is try to please. I'm told they are really slow at this, too. But we have a tiny house, and living in a urinal was (almost) enough to make a grown man cry. You'll have to take your lady-friends out to restaurants, instead of cooking at home.
