Wolfgang is entirely correct. Having had a bit of experience in serial numbers as used by the US military, I'd guess that, first, somebody decided that they needed to have five digits. Then, the first, or maybe the first two, numbers would stand for something like model number or production run. Something might indicate year of production. The rest of the number might be entirely random.
