Anyone who would soak in buttermilk for 12 hours IS a real turkey. My brother tried it once and was followed by every cat in the neighborhood for over a month. After a few days no one would sit near him and after a few more no one could stand to be near him. Eventually we tried bathing him in vinegar, which turned the buttermilk residue to low-fat cheese and apart from attracting mice (but that was okay, 'cause we made him sleep outdoors) he was nearly as tolerable as he ever was, which isn't saying much.
