The thing to keep in mind is that all food, except for protein will break down into sugar in your body...some more than others.

What has worked for me is whole foods and minimal bread/pasta products even if they are whole wheat/grains. You have to keep a close eye on labels because they can be misleading. No sugar added means that the food item has sugar in it naturally and no further sugar has been added. Sometimes things that advertise as sugar free, such as yogurt, aren't really sugar free as milk has naturally occuring sugar in it...if you look at the labels, you'll see that for yourself. If you are really into sweet things I'd suggest looking at agave nectar instead of honey or maple syrup or any of the artifical stuff. Agave nectar (found in natural food stores of natural food sections at the grocery store) is much lower on the glycemic index than honey or maple syrup yet is an incredible sweetener.
