Somebody might have monkeyed with your keyboard settings. From the START menu click CONTROL PANEL - PRINTERS AND OTHER HARDWARE - KEYBOARD - SPEED. If the "repeat delay" setting is at or near "long", move it to "short". If the "repeat rate" is at or near "slow" move it to "fast".
