I can't hear, much less sing, Every Star Shall Sing A Carol without crying. I'm not sure why. Perhaps when I first heard it, in my early teens, it appealed to me as an sf fan; it's not often you hear a hymn about alien life. Perhaps it's the way Carter could combine an open-minded, inquisitive outlook with rock-solid faith; as if to say, there's a great big universe out there, we know almost nothing about almost all of it, but we can be sure that God's out there too. Or perhaps it's just the wild, apocalyptic exorbitance of that first verse (every star!) Wonderful stuff, anyway.
