1. It used to be an island before the WPA filled in part of the water surrounding it. The name has simply continued, and soon Hawaii won't be an island either, but will be connected to Oregon.

2. It was founded by Cecil Rhode, one of Cecil Rhodes' grandfather, the other of whom was also named Cecil Rhode. When Cecil Rhodes' parent married they changed their last name to reflect the intersection of the Rhodes.
