OK, so I just looked up Alpheus and Peneus in Wiki (yeah, I know, too lazy to get the books down). They're river deities from Greek mythology. I liked the bit where Artemis covers her and her nymphs' faces with mud to escape Alpheus' attentions.   

Here is a verbatim quote regarding some of the antics of the gods:

It was Eros's plan that Daphne would scorn Apollo because Eros was angry that Apollo had made fun of his archery skills. Eros also claimed to be irritated by Apollo's singing.

Just sounds like a typical day in a Mudcat flame fest! Plus ça change . . .
