Hitchens in Fleetwood still have stocks of Funai Model 31B-250 VHS players at £19.95 or thereabouts which will play back NTSC tapes on PAL TVs. They occasionally have combo machines where you can transfer from tape to DVD recorder (about £65). Or if you already have a VHS player which sends these OK to your TV, standalone DVD recorders have come down seriously in price (less than £40?). Currys and Comet still tend to be dearer, but discount chains like Poundstretcher (Instore) occasionally offer cheaper-range machines at silly prices. I wouldn't expect this sort of machine to last a long time, but if they get the job done? Once on DVD, your films should play on your computer.
If none of the above is immediately possible, it's always worth just duplicating your VHS tapes if you can.
